website design for industrial companies

Case Study: Becker Brothers Graphite

Original Site

New Responsive Site

The Challenge

We created Becker Graphite's first website in 2006. At the time, a lot of industrial marketing was still done in the big green Thomas Register print directories and many of Becker's competitors had not yet established themselves on the internet. Becker's new internet presence quickly helped them reach new customers nationwide.

But with the mass expansion of everything internet related, advances to website design and the proliferation of smart phones and tablets over the next 10 years, their website had become obsolete. By 2015, their site looked outdated, their competitors had much more advanced sites, and their website did not work well on mobile devices with smaller screens. Additionally, updating price changes on their website was difficult. Their facility, their products and their machining services were also not very picturesque... everything in pictures was literally pretty much simple and black and white, so a compelling visual presentation was difficult.

New Site on Phone

The Solution

In 2016, we worked with Becker Graphite to update their website. We built a new, custom configured website that....

  1. Gave the site a cleaner, less crowded look that without distraction, makes it immediately clear what Becker Graphite does and makes it easy to quickly navigate the site.
  2. Added visual effect by using subtle background patterns. In the absence of compelling visual content, this helped the site be more visually appealing.
  3. Linked a Google gsheets spreadsheet to their product price tables so that simply changing the spreadsheet would update the website pages. There is no need to log into the website admin area to make their most frequent updates... just change the spreadsheet!
  4. Used a tabbed product / price tables to maximize use of "above the fold" page space. With the tabbed area, we could present 3 product / price tables in the same space where only one table would normally appear. So instead of massive up and down scrolling, you can just click a tab to see the next product / price table. We did this for their two main product areas of graphite rods and graphite plates.
  5. Enabled excess inventory information to be updated by using email to blog posts (coming soon!).
  6. Made it easy to contact them with a clear and simple contact page! Plus, all form submissions are automatically stored in an database for future marketing purposes.
  7. Made the website mobile friendly... a "responsive design" that automatically adjusts to any screen size.
