Increase Productivity – 3 White Noise Background Sound Generators

Back in college, some of my friends thought I was crazy because I used to like to study in the cafeteria. There was a constant buzz of activity and background noise, and seldom did any single noise stand out from the rest.

I also spent a lot of time studying and researching in the library (remember that place where people used to go to find information before the internet?). The library was fine, but it was normally so quiet that any small noise would pierce the silence. Somebody scooting a chair in or out, packing or unpacking a backpack, and even someone whispering to a friend were all distracting noises because they stood out rather than being lost in a cacophony of steady noise.

So that brings me to a recent tidbit I came across that said coffee shop background noise is helpful for creativity, so I thought I would revisit the topic and update my previous 2011 blog post on white noise. In that article, I mentioned two white noise generators and I’m glad to report that both are still around! They are…

  • WhiteNoisePlayer.com which has 8 different sounds from standard white noise to ocean waves, wind and rain, etc;
  • SimplyNoise.com which has three buttons at the top to produce slight different white noise.

Because of the coffee shop noise suggestion, I went searching and discovered a new background noise generator, SounDrown.com. SounDrown has all of the above sounds plus a few different ones…

  • coffee shop
  • fire
  • birds
  • train
  • playground
So if you’re around too many distractions and can’t escape, yet you need to focus on a project, check out these three sites for some awesome background noise options to drown out the chaos around you.
And then share this with your unfocused friends and colleagues! Your comments are welcome… I’d love to hear your feedback and ideas! For example, if you’re at a coffee shop, should you listen to the coffee shop noise generator to drown out the coffee shop noise? Just kidding, but I’d love to hear your feedback!
