Small and medium sized businesses (SMBs) rely on Google reviews significantly  more than large companies do. The numerous SMBs that you do business with regularly don't have entire marketing departments and huge marketing budgets like big companies do. Google reviews are one of the most powerful and affordable marketing resources available to SMBs and one of the most beneficial and productive paths to influencing buying decisions of potential new customers. But your favorite small companies don't control the whole process. They are relying on you to leave reviews for them, and they're hoping for good quality reviews! So help out your favorite SMBs and leave them great Google reviews!

Quality Google Reviews Help Other Potential Customers

People want to know if they can trust a company before doing business with that company. A quality Google review is one of the best ways to help them make that decision. Whether the transaction is business to consumer (B2C) or business to business (B2B), they want to know if the company that they might buy from has quality products or services and if their expenditure will bring them value. And they want to know if it is pleasant dealing with the company.

You can significantly help other potential customers with all of those questions. But too often, the quality of actual reviews can be insufficient and all over the place. Quite often, reviews don't provide the information that potential new customers are looking for.

7 Tips For Writing Quality Reviews

To help you write better quality Google reviews for small businesses and mid-sized companies, here are 7 points to consider.

  1. Write enough to make your review meaningful. If it's too short and you leave out pertinent information, your review won't have as much impact. You don't need to write a novel, but leaving 3 or 4 sentences of pertinent information is the most helpful.
  2. Be specific about the product or service you received. People reading reviews are more likely to discount generic reviews without details. Consider, for example... "I really loved the stuff I bought there. It was great!" Or, for example, "the people there are great!" It's nice to leave the review, but that doesn't really help anybody. Some degree of detail is helpful.

A more robust and specific review will help the person reading your review and the company you are reviewing. Write about the specific product(s) or services that you purchased. Write about why you bought them and if/how they fulfilled your need. Mention specific positives and/or negatives. Mention specific things about quality, price, shipping, customer service, etc. You don't need to touch on every single one of these specifics; Just covering one or two of them makes a much more powerful review.

  1. For business-to-business Google reviews, you can mention things like the challenge your company was facing or the problem you needed to address, and how the seller helped you in that regard. Were you launching a product or service and needed a new supplier? Did a previous supplier fail in some way and you needed to replace them ASAP? Were you prototyping and needed a supplier that would do small quantities quickly? Did you need a new supplier that would use their expertise to provide input on your project? Other companies reading your review like to see if the company being reviewed worked effectively in meeting your project needs, or helped you fix problems, find new efficiencies, etc. B2B purchasers often want a reliable, helpful and trustworthy partner rather than just a vendor, so a great review can be really helpful.
  2. For a high quality Google review, you should mention your location, being as specific as your comfort level allows. Some folks, for example, might mention a specific suburb of Indianapolis while others might want to more generally say Indianapolis or central Indiana. Consumers relate better when they literally know where you're coming from or when they share some geographic affinity with you. For B2B transactions, the purchasing company would give weight to the location mentioned because it can assure them that the supplier has done business near them and is capable of handling their needs over a distance as well. Plus, Google search algorithms value location data, so you can help the company you're reviewing even more by including location information.
  3. If you're writing a review from a purchase a while back, be sure to mention that in the review. If you want your review to influence people, then be honest and accurate. This allows the reader to decide if the review is still valuable or not. Or it might reassure a potential new customer either positively or negatively. If you write that you've used the service or had the product for about a year already, and it no longer works, then that is a problem that can help a new buyer in their decision process. If you mention that the supplier helped you with your issue a year later, that is valuable information. If they ignored your attempts to help them a year later, that is also valuable information. Or if you write a review saying that the service or product has served you well for five years, that is also incredibly valuable information to help the decision making process of a potential new buyer. So for reviews done much later, be sure to mention that!
  4. Include a picture of the product, of someone using the product at home or at work, or even a photo of your business location or facility. An image of anything related to the who, what or why of your purchase can be useful to other potential customers. And simply including a photo with your review will draw significantly more attention. Amazon already allows you to filter reviews to show only those with pictures; A handy feature! It would not be surprising at all if Google were to roll out that feature as well.
  5. If you're leaving a negative review, constructive criticism is received better than ranting and raving. Other potential customers will think that a thoughtful negative review is more believable than a hostile, angry review without supporting details. And the company being reviewed should appreciate honest, constructive feedback so that they can make amends and/or make improvements to win you over next time.

Quality Google Reviews Help Businesses

Many folks don't realize it, but leaving a quality Google review is about a lot more than just showing your appreciation or your frustration. Companies benefit from good reviews! Good reviews help companies get new customers. And good reviews help them in many ways on Google.

Quite simply, most people and many companies rely on Google reviews, and other reviews, to help them make buying decisions. You know that a lot of people only leave reviews when they've had a negative experience. So your positive review can help counteract negative reviews. And high quality reviews, as described above, help even more! Reviews motivate companies to keep working hard for you and for their other customers! Reviews help open the door to new customers! And if a company came up short in their service to you, most will still appreciate your review; It helps them to know where they've fallen short and where they can do better.

Just as important, your Google review can help a company with its search engine ranking, which then helps it get new customers. Reviews are a very important factor in search engine ranking results, and even on Google map results. It's not just the number of stars that matter. The quality of the reviews matters. The total number of reviews matters. The frequency of reviews matters. A consistent pattern of acquiring reviews matters. The age of a company's reviews matters. And companies responding to their reviews matters. These are all factors that, in aggregate, help or hurt a company's search engine ranking.

For example, having 350 reviews where 90% of them are older than five years is much less valuable than having 12-14 new reviews per month for each of the last 18 months. And going from 5 reviews to 500 overnight shows evidence of foul play, so that could actually hurt a company's search engine ranking.

Help Your Favorite Companies - Leave A Review!

So if you appreciate a company and want to help them, then leave them a good review! Most companies truly appreciate your effort to write a quality Google review on their behalf. And companies that have high quality Google reviews management in place will almost always respond to your review as well.

So please leave high quality Google reviews for companies that you like to do business with. It helps them in so many ways and it helps other potential customers just as much.
